The Sunday Newspaper Brunch Club

On the Sunday Newspaper Brunch Club today (11am Sky Digital 65), NBR journalist, Ben Thomas and news guru, Bill Ralston.

STORY 1
Spies in the house of love – SST
An Auckland private investigation firm is paying agents to infiltrate and spy on environmental, peace and anti-vivisection groups for its clients, including state-owned enterprise Solid Energy. Who is spying on peace groups? Why is a government agency sending in spies to environmental groups? Doesn’t this stand for everything we don’t like as NZers?

STORY 2
Prison Riot – SST/HOS
A clash between rival youth gangs yesterday forced the lockdown of Wellington's Rimutaka Prison and the callout of 50 riot officers. Rimutaka has become the most corrupt prison in the country with new revelations that Guards were bribed for good behaviour reports. When Corrections chief executive Barry Matthews told reporters earlier this year that it was only a couple of bad apples and not a culture of corruption within the prison system, was he lying or showing how out of touch with the reality of the situation he is?

STORY 3
Balmy May weather just too warm for skiers – SST
The balmy May weather might be a tonic for some but it is threatening to delay the start of the ski season. Most fields are due to open in early June, but say they have only a thin or non-existent snow base. Welcome global warming, this May is shaping up to be the warmest on record, how are we going to adapt to change like this? Will sking become a thing of the past?

STORY 4
Boy Racer terror – SST Drink Driving - HOS
All week we’ve had moral panic over boy racers, how ridiculous has the coverage and knee jerk reactions been? Thankfully Anthony Hubbard puts the break on the nonsense with a brilliant piece looking at the actual impact of boy racer deaths, only 5% of deaths. Where is the same outcry over our appalling drink driving stats?

STORY 5
Leader Change – HOS
Oh come on, a couple of bad polls and Helen Clarke is gone? If we did look at it though, we know Mahary can’t do it, but who could Helen’s replacement be?

Clark's gone and everyone knows it. The left has lost and late next year NZ will be back with a proper Government. Hurts I know but shit happens. Still, you'll have more to whine about.

Didn't you see the headline in the Weekend Herald mate, ONE PARTY STATE...maybe you better get used to that first!

The front page of the SST available in Christchurch differs from the one displayed on Alt TV today.

There is no 'property' story on the front page of the South Island (or non-Auckland?) edition. The infiltration of activist groups takes up 3/4 of the news space. The bottom quarter is a story about a drink driving blitz.

If Key becomes PM, I'm moving to Aussie. With any luck there'll be a Labor government by then.

Same here. Enjoy your privatization scumbags! Come on we all know John Key is really a fascist in disguise. Won't be long before the details of his supposed "membership" come out the woodwork. Won't be too long until that story hits the papers. My lips are sealed.

Right, so you are heading to a country more right wing than NZ with a far higher level of privatisation than NZ; a country to which right leaning NZers have been flocking to in the last 7 years because they don't like the socialist govt of NZ; a country that has been constantly reviled as rightwing and racist, supports the war in Iraq and has delivered big tax cuts - you know those evil tax cuts for the rich - for the past few years. I really don't think you are going to like it much.

anon 2:16pm), did you read what I said?

I was responding to Key's claim that large numbers of Kiwis are flocking to Oz because of NZ Labour Party/government's policies.

All those good things you say about NZ compared with right wing Oz will change if there's a change of ruling parties in each country.

I have no desire to be in NZ under a Key/National government.

Oz under a Labour government could start to look attractive.

As a nation we really have to get over this little brother to Australia thing.

Defaulting to "i'm moving to Aussie" is a broken record.

It speaks of the Kiwi blinker mentality.

"i'm moving to Britain" or "i'm moving to the US/Canada". Why isn't this the mantra?

bomber and co, are some of the least educated people I have ever come across in the media (that says something!) as far as climate change is concerned.

Oh and it's really no worry at all if there is no snow on the skifields in late may, it's quite ordinary infact, as the skifield operators, niwa, the metservice etc will all tell you.
