Pro-China protests to take place in Auckland this weekend
Local Chinese plan rally to back Games
Auckland's mainland Chinese community has planned a pro-Olympic demonstration this Sunday against the anti-China protests which are following the Olympic torch. "It will be a gathering of people who are proud of our country, and of it being the first time that China will be taking centre stage as Olympic hosts," said organiser Johnson Yuan, 22. At least 400 people have registered to take part in this weekend's demonstration at Aotea Square, which Mr Yuan, an Auckland University research assistant, said is aimed at promoting China and the Olympics "in a positive light". Last month, Mr Yuan organised a protest against New Zealand and Western media organisations, alleging they "distorted" coverage of the unrest in Tibet and for "painting China black". Chinese international student Reggie Ji, 21, said nationalistic feelings were running high among the Chinese because of the Olympics, and it was his "pride of China" that had made him register to take part. "We are sick of the lies, and for being put down by Western countries," he said. "This time, we Chinese can stand together as one to show that we are proud of our country, and that we are a united people who are proud of the Olympics." The Auckland protest follows a series of anti-Western demonstrations by Chinese nationals around the world as nationalistic feelings come to the fore.
These are not 'Pro-Olympic' protests, they are pro-Chinese protests, none of the language used by the organisers suggests that this is anything other than a whitewash pr campaign for the largest dictatorship in the world. The question is will there be a protest group there to meet them - can local Human Rights groups allow this pro-china rally to go unchallenged?

Surely there are chinese people who live here after having fled the oppressive Chinese regime, if the regime is as bad as the some in the west believe. Have these pro-chinese-regime chinese come here to mute anti-chinese sentiment? If not, what have they come for?
I would like to hear from the pro-chinese why they left a system of communism in favour of democracy if they prefer communism.
I would also like to hear from those chinese who left the chinese mainland precisely because they dislike the chinese regime.
Maybe Bomber didn't want the image of himself being subjected to spinning bird kicks by 9 year old asian girls when he tries to waddle away from his ant-chinese protest protest.

One of the down sides of marketing NZ higher education to countries like the PRC is that we get inundated by authoritarian droids like Mr. Yuan, to say nothing of agents of the Chinese government. That they can engage in acts of censorship like the Craccum theft and then have the temerity to organise "pro-Chinese" protests against those symbolically using the Olympic torch as a prop in their pro-Tibet and pro-human rights demonstrations shows the depths to which NZ governments have dropped moral and ethical considerations in their pursuit of the almighty trade dollar. As for the Chinese student thugs in our midst--they must be repudiated at least and sent packing at worst.
If Pro-Tibetans group can protest, so why not pro-chinese group protest. Stop whining, if you are preaching democracy as what you claimed to be, just accept the fact that this is democracy in the workings.

I beg to differ. I think you will find that it is the US that is the world's biggest terrorist and dictatorship. Further, I find it intriguing that all these pro-Tibet fundamentalists do not appear to care a toss for the abuse of Chinese workers in sweatshops... but then these are the same people happily wearing Nike and Prada and various other luxury Western brands.
If Pro-Tibetans group can protest, so why not pro-chinese group protest. Stop whining, if you are preaching democracy as what you claimed to be, just accept the fact that this is democracy in the workings.
Because you are not democratic - you represent the largest dictatorship on the planet, you are using our democratic rights and freedoms to promote and celebrate the largest dictatorship on the planet, that's why.

Do you even understand what a dictatorship is? Ask Hillary or McCain or Obama if America is a dictatorship - yes under Bush they are certainly open to accusations of terrorism - but the title biggest dictatorship of the planet is still China's

It is disgusting the work conditions in China and I support any boycott on all those brands, these pointgs do nothing to counter the criticism of China, if anything they simply add to it.

I am a China born human being. Didn't go to the protest today, Just wondering why this world has to devided by all sorts of groups.
The BBC today is quick to make comparisons between the responses of China and Burma to the recent natural disasters. Burma was hit on 3 May 2008 by Cyclone Nargis whilst China suffered a massive earthquake in Sichuan Province on 12 May 2008.
But we humans tend to have short memories... the more appropriate comparison in our contemporary global political stage is that between two of the world's superpowers, their ideological commitments, and the nature of their political styles. Thus we can compare a 'Communist' and 'non-Western' state (China) with the supposed pinnacle of civilization the 'Capitalist Democratic' and 'Western' state (USA) in terms of compassion and treatment of citizens.
Thus on the one hand, we have the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao personally flying in to the disaster region to take charge within hours of the earthquake striking, and on the other hand we have the US President George W. Bush merrily celebrating John McCain's birthday on Monday 29 August 2005 whilst Hurricane Katrina made landfall near Buras Louisiana as a Category 3 storm. In fact, Katrina had already made first landfall on 25 August 2005 in South Florida as a Category 1 hurricane.
So the leader of the demonized 'Communist' People's Republic of China responds to a national crisis in hours and the 'War President', champion of US capitalism and the Land of the Free couldn't care less about the lives of US citizens struck by 1 of the 5 deadliest hurricanes in US history.
Surely this is cause to pause and wonder if 'communism' is the human rights abusing system the 'West' makes it out to be, and if 'capitalism' is really the best and most humane we can come up with as a political-economic system?
