Is this what the West is fighting for in Afghanistan is it?

Afghan President pardons three found guilty of gang-rape
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pardoned three men found guilty of gang-raping a woman in the northern province of Samangan. The woman, Sara, and her family found out about the pardon only when they saw the rapists back in their village. "Everyone was shocked," said Sara's husband, Dilawar, who, like many Afghans, uses only one name. "These were men who had been sentenced by the Supreme Court, walking around freely." Sara's case highlights concerns about the close relationship between the Afghan President and men accused of war crimes and human rights abuses. The men were freed discreetly but the rape was public and brutal. It took place in September 2005, in the run-up to Afghanistan's first democratic parliamentary elections.

Some of my ‘friends’ here criticized my less than enthusiastic embrace of the murder of civilians in Afghanistan and my lack of faith in America to win the war, I argued that there isn’t a military solution to this, but my ‘friends’ here decried that as anti-amerikkkanism and we should rally around and ignore the murdered civilians because we need to win. So here we have an example of what exactly the West is fighting for, corrupt warlords and a President who is letting pack rapists walk free, I only thought we had to put up with that in our own country with our own Police force, but apparently the West needs to put up with it from regimes we prop up in countries we invade now as well, and here was me believing the hype that the war in Afghanistan was all about feminism and giving women rights. There is no military victory here, none. We will lose this war, just like every country who has invaded Afghanistan has lost this war, why did we think we were so fucking special?

Remind me again why the West is in Afghanistan killing civillians? Hunting Osama Bin Laden? Women's rights? Pick one and make up a justification.

You weren't defending the Wests involvement in Afghanistan last week SDM? I remember you having a go at Bomber for not wanting to be in Afghanistan, so remind us all again of that position or are you distancing yourself from what you were proclaiming last week SDM?

Using your logic, you obviously support countries that the US hasn't got involved in? Big fan of Darfur are you? Happy with what the Taleban did? Are human rights abuses only bad when the US is involved (albeit indirectly)

You are drawing a long bow.....

SDM last week...

BOmber

Who do you want to win this war?

You remember that debate last week don't you SDM? You were having a go at BOmber for criticising civillian deaths in Afghanistan, remind us all again why we should be fully behind America when the regime they are propping up lets pack rapists walk. You could get a job as a PR person for Clint Rickards.

So you equate me wanting the US to win in Afghanistan - and defeat the Taleban, with my support of pack rape?

Is Karzai a member of the Taliban?

The West went to war to place Karzai in power, the West are propping him up, the West are responsible for him being in power, thus the West are responsible for his actions.

It's not really that hard angry anonymous.

Again Legio, I have no interest in your opinion of me, just your opinion on the issue. Repost minus the personal abuse and it won't be taken off. You are the only person on this blog who gets repeatedly told this.

Can we therefore blame Islam for a regime which breaches human rights, yet came to power on the back of that Religion?

Simple answer then bomber.
You are part of the "west".

Therefore why do you support Hamid Karzai?

How are you comparing America propping up a regime that abuses human rights and a multi-faceted religion that has a splinter extreme?

You are part of the "west".

Therefore why do you support Hamid Karzai?

That's right, and that's why I have protested and mentioned it when I can, blogged, critiqued and intend to ultimatly vote on the issue in this years election. But being a citizen in NZ, my level of responsibility is diminished at best, but America's is much more direct and thus much more responsible.

Being a westener - you have the right to criticise. Wouldn't you like those not in the west to have that same right?

So, it's not really "the west" fault, rather certain agencies and Governments.

Interesting point "the West" should not be confused with "the American government".

Yes, it was a stupid idea for the US to send troops into Afghanistan, but that mistake has been made and they're paying for it with the blood of their soldiers.

But..

To withdraw American troops now would likely lead to more civilian deaths as the Taliban carry out revenge attacks and lets not forget its not just US forces killing civilians in Afghanistan. Taliban suicide bombers are also pretty indiscriminate http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/02/17/asia/afghan.php

As for the fundamentalist Islamist idea of womens rights, check this out: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article4606947.ece
