Did David Parker just kill Labour's commitment to public broadcasting?

David Parker at the Robert Walters Finance breakfast....

Labour published a closed list of assets that we believe ought to be run in the New Zealand interest because they have monopoly characteristics - assets such as electricity line networks, water and airports.

The list excludes telecommunications and electricity generation

Did David Parker just kill Labour's commitment to public broadcasting? Touring the country with Clare Curran for 6 weeks on the Save TVNZ7 meetings, one thing became abundantly clear, the monopoly position Sky has gained under successive Government's non regulation of telecommunications has given them unprecedented broadcasting power.

How will Labour see their goal of a properly funded public broadcaster if they aren't prepared to regulate Sky and the other telcos as Peter Thompson has suggested?

Are we now seeing the price of the private dinner Shearer had with Sky TV?

Public Broadcasting is a real issue and if Labour want to support it they must bite the bullet and bring regulation to the monopoly that has benefitted most from the non-regulation.

If Labour have no intention of reigning in Sky TV, they must make their position clear so that voters who value public broadcasting know who not to cast their vote for in 2014.
